A Community-Engaged and Donor-Supported School Created to Break the Cycle of Poverty Through Education.

San Andrés Itzapa is a predominantly Indigenous community in the highlands of Chimaltenango, Guatemala. The municipality has a strong Maya identity, with Kaqchikel the predominant Indigenous language. Spanish is widely used in schools and official settings, but language and economic barriers can create additional challenges for children beginning their education.

Economic hardship is a significant reality for many families. Government planning data document high levels of poverty in the municipality, while limited educational resources and broader inequalities can make it difficult for children to remain in school and progress through higher grades.

These challenges are particularly important during the earliest years of education. Children who begin falling behind in reading, mathematics, and other fundamental skills can find it increasingly difficult to catch up as they move through school.

Niños Creadores de Historia works within this community to provide additional support to young students during these critical early years. Through supplemental instruction, access to books, encouragement, and a nutritious daily meal, the school helps children build the academic foundation and confidence they need to continue their education.

The goal is simple but important: give children a stronger start in school and a better opportunity to build a more secure future.
